Water, Done Properly

Everyone recognises a good pool within a second of seeing it. Almost nobody could say what they are recognising.

It is worth setting out, because the qualities that make water look and feel right are not mysterious, and holding them is a craft rather than a chore.

What you are actually seeing

Clarity, not blueness. The colour of a pool comes from the surface and the depth. The quality comes from clarity — the ability to read the grout lines at the deep end from the far side. Clarity is filtration and circulation doing their work continuously, not chemistry doing it in bursts.

A still surface with movement underneath. A well-circulated pool turns its entire volume over several times a day without any visible turbulence. What you see is stillness. What is happening is constant exchange.

No smell. The chlorine smell people associate with pools is not chlorine. It is chloramine — the compound formed when chlorine has already reacted with organic matter. A pool that smells of chlorine is a pool telling you its free chlorine has been consumed. Water in balance has almost no scent at all.

Skin that feels like nothing. Water that leaves you tight and itchy is out of balance, usually low on calcium or wrong on pH. Water held correctly feels soft, and you notice it mostly by not noticing it.

The numbers behind the feeling

Five values do almost all of the work, and they hold each other in place.

pH between 7.2 and 7.6. Above this, chlorine loses most of its effectiveness and scale begins to form. Below it, water becomes aggressive to plaster, grout and metal. pH is the master value; almost every other problem begins here.

Free chlorine at 1–3 mg/l, and — more importantly — combined chlorine at almost nothing. The gap between the two tells you whether the pool is winning or losing.

Total alkalinity between 80 and 120 mg/l. This is what stops pH from moving every time somebody swims. Get alkalinity right and pH becomes stable rather than a daily argument.

Cyanuric acid between 30 and 50 mg/l on an outdoor pool in this climate. It protects chlorine from ultraviolet light, which on the Aegean in July is not a small consideration. Too little and chlorine burns off by lunchtime; too much and it stops working altogether.

Calcium hardness between 200 and 400 mg/l. Too low and the water dissolves what it touches. Too high and it deposits on everything.

None of these numbers are difficult. What is difficult is holding all five at once, through a heatwave, with twelve people in the pool.

Circulation is the part nobody sees

Chemistry gets the attention, but a pool is mostly a hydraulic problem.

The turnover rate — how long the pump takes to move the entire volume through the filter — determines whether chemistry has to work hard or barely at all. A pool with correct turnover, clean filtration and well-positioned returns will hold its balance with very little intervention. A pool with poor circulation can be dosed daily and never look right.

Which is why a plant room tells you more about a pool than the water does. Pump condition and duty hours. Filter pressure against its clean baseline, and when it was last properly backwashed. Whether the returns are directed to move water across the surface rather than into a corner. Whether the pool is running long enough in August and not pointlessly long in February.

Monitored, not visited

Here is the distinction that decides everything.

A pool that is tested when somebody happens to be there is not being monitored. It is being sampled — and the sample is always taken at the same convenient hour, which is rarely the hour that matters.

Water in an outdoor pool on this coast can move meaningfully within a day. Sun, bather load, rain, top-up water and temperature all push it. The pools that stay right are the ones where the values are recorded rather than remembered, so that a drift is visible as a trend three days before it becomes visible as cloudiness.

That record is also what makes the plant maintainable. A pump whose duty hours are logged gets serviced before it fails. A filter whose pressure is tracked gets cleaned when it needs it rather than when somebody notices.

Why it is worth the trouble

Because the pool is the centre of the house for four months of the year, and because water is the one element in a residence that cannot be faked.

A guest cannot tell whether the roof was checked in October. They can tell, immediately and without knowing why, whether the water is right.
